There are several expenses that you can include when itemizing your deductions. Some don’t fit into any of the other groups of itemized deductions, so they fall under miscellaneous expenses.
Go to this section in Credit Karma Tax: Miscellaneous Expenses
While some of these deductions have no minimum requirement, others are deductible only to the extent that they exceed 2 percent of your adjusted gross income (AGI).
The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA) eliminates most of these miscellaneous itemized deductions:
- Deductions for employee business expenses
- Tax preparation fees
- Investment expenses, including investment management fees
- Employment related educational expenses
- Job search expenses
- Hobby losses
- Safe deposit box fees
- Investment expenses from pass-through entities
Note: Some states are still allowing these deductions. If you paid any of these expenses in 2018 you should still enter your info on Credit Karma Tax to see if you qualify for a deduction for these items on your state return.
