What home upgrades qualify for claiming the Residential Energy Efficient Property Credit?

You may be eligible for the Residential Energy Efficient Property Credit if you made the following qualifying improvements to your home during the year:

  • Solar electric property
  • Solar water heaters
  • Fuel cell property
  • Small wind energy property
  • Geothermal heat pumps

The home must be in the United States to take this credit but it doesn’t have to be your main home. The credit is equal to 30% of your total cost, including labor, assembly and installation costs from qualifying energy efficient property. Although the credit is nonrefundable, it may be carried forward to a future year.
