#Good news! The IRS has extended the tax deadline to April 18th! As long as you submit your federal return by midnight on 4/18/2018, you won't be considered a late filer for your federal return. Direct debit tax payments that are submitted with your federal return (or on the IRS website) by 4/18 are also considered timely filed ×

For married taxpayers filing separately, can one spouse itemize deductions and the other use the standard deduction?

If you and your spouse file separate returns and your spouse claims itemized deductions, you must also claim itemized deductions. This is the case even if your standard deduction is higher than your itemized deductions. The same rule applies if one of you claims the standard deduction instead of itemized deductions.

The IRS Topic No. 501 has more information to help you determine if you should itemize or take the standard deduction.
