Importing an image or a file of your W-2 can help making doing your taxes quick and easy. If you’re having trouble importing your W-2, you can try some of the suggestions below to troubleshoot the issue. If all else fails, of if something doesn’t look right, you can always manually enter or update the information.
Go to this section in Credit Karma Tax: Add a new W-2
How do I use it?
You can take a picture of the W-2 using your mobile phone camera or you can upload the document from your computer.
We currently accept the following files: pdf, jpeg, png, and tiff.
If you upload a document that isn’t one of the the acceptable files, then your images of your W-2 may not be read properly.
I have problems uploading my W-2 through my phone. Is it because I have an older phone?
Newer phones will generally have more sophisticated cameras than older ones but that shouldn’t be a problem in most cases. Try the following to improve your chances of success:
- Try to minimize glare and shadows
- Angle the phone to incorporate as much of the W-2 as possible
- Take the picture on a flat surface
I followed your tips, but I still can’t import my W-2, what went wrong?
Currently, we can import most versions of W-2s provided by the IRS or approved substitute versions of the form such as those provided by ADP. If importing an image of your W-2 isn’t working for you, we suggest entering the information from your W-2 manually.
I tried taking a picture of my W-2 multiple times already but Credit Karma Tax is preventing me from trying again!
If we’re not able to successfully import your W-2 after three attempts, you’ll need to enter the information manually.
Some of the information on my W-2 wasn’t carried over or isn’t completely accurate. Should I just leave it as is?
Make sure to double-check all values before continuing to the next page. If you spot any mistakes when using the upload feature, make edits on the W-2 screen to accurately reflect the information on your tax return.
Will I be able to upload other forms too? I would love to import my 1099-B and 1099-K too.
We only support importing your W-2 at this time but may add support for additional forms in future tax seasons. For this year, you’ll need to manually enter the information from your other forms.
Can I opt to manually enter the W-2 information instead of uploading the document?
Yes! Importing your W-2 is meant to make this part of doing your taxes quick and easy. You can enter your W-2 manually if you prefer to do so or if you’re having trouble importing.
