Commonly seen in your W-2, box B and the care provider information form, an Employer Identification Number (EIN) is a 9-digit number used to identify a business. The EIN will follow this format: XX-XXXXXXX.

Generally, if you own a business you’ll need an EIN. To see if you need an EIN for your business, check the IRS website here.
If you’ve paid child or dependent care expense for a qualifying individual to a care provider, the EIN or social security number (SSN) must be included to claim the Child and Dependent Care Credit.
My return was rejected due to the EIN
If you’ve already double-checked the numbers, the next step is to contact the organization that issued the tax form(s). The payroll and human resources department should provide more information about the company’s EIN.
Once you’ve updated your EIN, be sure to follow through the filing process to re-submit your tax return.
