Guide to Michigan State Amendments on Credit Karma Tax

Step 1) Choose to file an amended return. Be sure to check out this article for background information

If you didn’t file this year’s taxes with Credit Karma tax, you can access amendments by navigating here.

Step 2) Choose State Amendment
If you originally chose to file both Federal and State, you can also navigate to the following pages once you’ve finished your Federal Amendment.

Step 3) Select the Great Lakes State of Michigan.

Step 4) Update or correct your return information.

 

  • Update or correct the information that was originally entered on your federal and/or state tax return on Credit Karma Tax.
    • Example: if you have received an updated W-2, you need to go back to the W-2 section of your return on Credit Karma Tax to update this information.
  • Print out your original return. If you originally filed with Credit Karma Tax, please click on the blue “Update your tax return” below.
  • Please be sure to write down any changes you make. You will need to input the original information later on. 
  • Then, come back to the Amendment section to input the updated/correct information on your original return.
    • Please note that all amended returns must be sent via the postal service, and cannot be filed electronically.

Step 5) Select your Original Filing Status.

Step 6) Enter your exemptions. Note: if you are unsure where to find these values, see “Where to Find These Values” directly below “Michigan Exemptions” section.

Step 7) Enter your originally filed MI income,additions and deductions. If you are unsure where to find these values, see “Where to Find These Values” directly below “Income, Additions and Deductions” section.

Step 8) Enter your originally filed MI nonrefundable credits. If you are unsure where to find these values, see “Where to Find These Values” directly below “Michigan Nonrefundable Credits” section.

Step 9) Enter your originally filed MI Refundable Credits and Payments.. If you are unsure where to find these values, see “Where to Find These Values” directly below “Michigan Refundable Credits and Payments” section.

Step 10) Enter the refund amount you would have received prior to filing an amended return. Note: If not refund was received or expected to be received, leave this field blank.

Step 11) Enter the amount you paid when you originally filed your return. If you have not made a payment yet, enter the amount you would have paid. Note: If you did not have a payment to make, leave this field blank.

Step 12) Explain why an amendment was necessary.

Step 13) After you have entered your information, you will have a review of the amendment before printing and mailing. You will see a summary of what you have over/underpaid.

Step 14) Print and Mail your return.
