Guide to Federal Amendments on Credit Karma Tax

Step 1) Choose to "File an amended return". Be sure to check out this article for some background information.

If you didn't file this year's taxes with Credit Karma Tax, you can access amendments by navigating here.

Step 2) "Choose Federal Only Amendment or Federal + State Amendment" if you need to also file an amended state return. If filing an amended state return, you will be asked questions about your state amendment after completing your federal amendment.

Step 3) Prepare to file your Amended return.

  • Please note that all amended returns must be sent via the postal service, and can’t be filed electronically.
  • It typically takes the IRS 8-12 weeks to process amended returns, but it can take longer in some cases.

Step 4) Update or correct your return information.

  • Update or correct the information that was originally entered on your federal tax return on Credit Karma Tax. 
      • Example: If you have received an updated W-2, you need return to the W-2 section of your return on Credit Karma Tax to update this information.
  • Please be sure to write down any changes you make. You will need to input the original information later on.
  • Print out your original return. If you originally filed with Credit Karma Tax, please click on the blue "Update your tax return" link below.  
  • Then, come back to the Amendment section to input the updated/correct information on your original return.

Step 5) Decide if there are any changes to the exemptions you're claiming.

  • If changing your exemptions, click "Yes" and you will be taken to "Exemption Information".
  • If not, click "No" and you will be taken to "Income and Deductions". (If you choose “Yes”, you will be taken to "Income and Deductions" after clicking “Continue”).

Step 6) Input the AGI (Adjusted Gross Income) from your original return.

Step 7) Input the tax liability information that you reported on your original return. Please see the “Where to Find These Values” section for instructions on where to locate this information on your 1040.

Step 8) Input the payment information you reported on your original return. Please see the “Where to Find These Values” section for instructions on where to locate this information on your 1040.

Step 9) Almost done! Now enter your original refund amount.

Step 10) Last but not least, explain why you need to file a federal amended return.

Step 11) Mail your Form 1040X (Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return) to the IRS.
