#Good news! The IRS has extended the tax deadline to April 18th! As long as you submit your federal return by midnight on 4/18/2018, you won't be considered a late filer for your federal return. Direct debit tax payments that are submitted with your federal return (or on the IRS website) by 4/18 are also considered timely filed ×

How do I know if I qualify for a health coverage exemption?

The Individual Shared responsibility Provision of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires that taxpayers have qualifying health coverage throughout the year, qualify for an exemption, or make a shared responsibility payment with their federal tax returns.

You might qualify for a hardship exemption if you experience a life situation such as a bankruptcy or the death of a family member which prevented you from getting health insurance.

Hardship exemptions usually apply to the month before the hardship until the month after the hardship.

You can claim most health coverage exemptions when you file your taxes. The IRS provides resources on Exemptions: Claiming or Reporting to help you determine what you need to claim an exemption.

For certain hardship exemptions you will need a Exemption Certificate Number (ECN) that you receive after being approved by the Health Insurance Marketplace. Forms and application information are available on healthcare.gov
