When do I need to file my MI amendment?

If you need to make any adjustments to your Michigan state return or if the changes in your federal return affected your state return, you may need to file an amended return. You have 4 years from the original due date to file an amended Michigan income tax return when requesting a refund, or within a year of over-payment of income tax, whichever date is later.

Print out your amended return and mail it to the Michigan Department of Treasury:

What should I expect when I file an amended return?

The state of Michigan may impose the following penalties and interest fees:

  • If you owed taxes before February 28, 2003,the penalty is 5% per month until paid in full but cannot exceed 50% of total tax due.
    • In the first month that bill is due, the minimum penalty is 5% of tax due or $10, whichever number is greater. 
  • If you owed taxes after February 28, 2003, penalty is 5% of tax due but cannot exceed 25% of total taxes owed.
    • The state also charges a 4.4% interest rate on taxes owed.
