When do I need to file my MA amendment?

If you need to make any adjustments to your Massachusetts state return or if the changes in your federal return affected your state return, you may need to file an amended return. You have 3 years from the original due date to file an amended Massachusetts income tax return when requesting a refund.

How do I file a Massachusetts Amended Individual Tax Return (Form ABT)?

Fill out the MA amendment section form (ABT) on Credit Karma Tax.

You will need to print out your amended return and mail it to the Massachusetts Department of Revenue

What to expect when I file an amended return?

The state of Massachusetts has the following penalties and interest fees:

  • You will need to pay a late file penalty of up to 1% per month your taxes are unpaid 
  • You may also be charged up to a 1% penalty per month for unpaid tax due balances
  • Late return penalties and unpaid balance penalties are each capped at 25% of the unpaid tax.
